What caused Google to emerge as a leader in internet search over its competitors?
In the early days of the www as we know it, how did Google take market share away from competitors like Yahoo!, Lycos, Web-crawler, Alta Vista, Netscape, Mamma, Ask Jeeves, etc etc. I’m sure there are several more. Seems that many offer several of the same hits – so how did Google emerge as leader?
Also are there any other search engines not as well heard of that offer any unique features as an alternative?
Ok as a Search Engine Optimization specialist I can tell you that Google became popular because they offered more relevant results.
At the time before Google, all the Search Engines more or less worked the same, basing all their information from Meta Keywords and on page content. This was quickly found to be easy to manipulate and get your website to be number one for a specific search event though your website had nothing to do with it.
Google decided that a better way to decide what sites are most relevant is by counting the number ob other websites that link to them. So as to assume if websites A, B, and C all link to Website D using the same type of anchor text, then Website D must be the most relevant.
This and some other algorithm factors that were just better the other engines led to Google becoming the best search engine.
If you want to know what made Google so rich its their introduction to their Google Adwords advertising campaign but thats a whole other story.
